About us

Office of the Supreme Mufti

The Office of the Supreme Mufti is an autonomous body providing leadership and oversight of Muslims affairs in Uganda, established to restore confidence in Muslim leadership after the sitting leaders had been implicated in mismanagement of Muslim properties and other resources.

The entity is duly registered and recognized under the laws of Uganda as an independent self-governing and self-regulating entity providing stewardship for Muslim affairs and working to unite all Muslim groups and factions under a single umbrella for socio-economic advancement of the Muslim Community.

Islam in Uganda was welcomed as a state religion, when King Ssuuna decreed that all courtiers embrace the new belief and faith practice.  At the height of colonial influence and religious conflict in Uganda, a settlement was reached when Islam was assigned royal oversight through Chief Prince Nuhu Kyabasinga Mbogo, who was designated in the 1900 Uganda agreement as the Titular head of the Islamic Faith in Uganda.

This Royal Oversight has been recognized and maintained through the years, first through the late Prince Badru Kakungulu who contributed a lot in the establishment of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council and presently by His Highness Prince Dr. Kassim Nakibinge.

It’s against this background that the Office of the Supreme Mufti at Kibuli receives mandate to provide direction for the Muslim community, every time political and other leadership contradictions create a vacuum and crisis of credibility that threatens to disaffect Muslim followers with their leadership. In quest of ethical governance and accountability, Muslim leadership has always sprouted up from Kibuli hill to provide a much needed hope and assurance for the continuity of the Muslim faith in Uganda.
